So far it’s been a learning whirlwind (electricity, DIY biology, physical computing, and programming) at NYU ITP camp. Last night (with lots of guidance) I built a gel electrophoresis box. It’s used to separate DNA chains to identify whatever DNA you might be working on. The way it works is that DNA is always negatively charged, so if you run a current through it, it starts traveling towards the positive pole. In this case, most of what you see is food coloring (some colors did separate into components). I went with the power supply rather than the chain of 9-volt batteries because I thought it looked cooler. you can’t see the DNA really, but if you shine a UV light on it, you can see it. |
